During troubling times, remembering to focus on the positive will help us come out unperturbed. I remember reading a book called ‘Man’s Search for Meaning,’ by Viktor Frankl and one thing that stood out was his ability to choose his thoughts amidst the devastation of the Holocaust. They were able to take his belongings, family, and entire life yet they were not able to control his mind and how he chose to live every day.
Reflecting on my own life and the challenges that I’ve personally overcome, I can say that there has always been a positive side to my experiences, I may not have been able to see them at the time yet they were always there. Looking at the positive helps us take a powerful stance in life versus that of the powerless victim that believes that life is working against them instead of for them.
Having gratitude also helps empower us to be more self-fulfilled instead of seeking validation from external circumstances. As the saying goes, ‘when the going gets tough, the tough get going.’ Let’s seek the positive and allow it to fill our daily life, let’s choose our thoughts wisely because alas, we are the ones inhabiting our minds and thus are directly and immediately affected.
