“It’s often difficult for those who are lucky enough to have never experienced what true depression is to imagine a life of complete hopelessness, emptiness and fear.”-Susan Polis Schutz
There are many hypotheses and studies on what may cause depression, they may range from DNA, trauma, to food among others. As a person who has gone through all sorts of stages of depression I can say this-no one, not even a doctor, can truly tell me how to solve the pain that I’ve had inside. I have found that I am my greatest advocate for health overall, mental, physical, and spiritual.
This is why I feel it is important to know oneself and to try different things out to see what is a good fit. I set the example of a hair stylist, there are thousands of hair stylists out there however each one applies this art exclusively to who they are, to how they see their art. It is not to say that one is better than the other, it’s simply that we are each uniquely gifted with our own art. As a massage therapist I have seen hundreds of bodies and not one single body has been identical.
You now see why it may be absurd to feed the same ideas/medicine to all people-it just doesn’t work. We have the homeless people on Skid Row to prove that. In the West we are barely dipping our toes into natural medicine, for a while therapies such as mine-massage-were overlooked by doctors, but now people are beginning to see its health benefits. And then there is also the spiritual aspect of depression, one thing I found out through a shaman is that ‘the dark night of the soul’ is a form of depression unlike what is considered clinical depression which comes from external forces such as the death of a loved one, job loss, etc. It is a form of spiritual cleansing for the soul to release all that is no longer serving one’s highest purpose.
Who are you? What are your habits? What triggers you? Get to know yourself so you understand why your world is the way it is, look through your family tree, what were your family members like? It may amaze you at some of the similarities you will find. There are all sorts of ways to heal oneself, seek and you shall find. Know yourself, empower yourself.
